Google Expands Adsense
Program: November 2003
November 26, 2003
In November of 2003, Google continued its Adsense expansion,
sending approval letters to many website owners previously
turned town for participation in the AdSense program. In effect,
this expansion has opened the door to many smaller informational
website owners to generate advertising
income
by displaying
Google
Adwords on their websites.
How does Google AdSense work?
Upon approval, a webmaster chooses an ad style, selects a color
scheme, and then adds a simple javascript code to any or all
pages of the approved website. Google studies it's "spidered"
cache ( copy )
of
the
approved website to deliver content relevant advertisements.
When any visitor clicks on an advertisement, the website owner
is paid. All relevant statistics are available from a web interface
which is updated on a regular basis.
The success of a google adsense program is first dependant
upon proper page text ( "copy" ), and correct website architecture
for each page. Google must be able to successfully determine
the subject matter of the page in order to deliver the proper
advertisements.
Second, "click through rates" ( CTR ) are largely dependant
upon the type of traffic that a website receives, and varies
dramatically between different industries. Click through rates
can be improved by drawing a wider variety of visitors. Methods
to improve CTR include developing new content, improving search
engine ranking performance, placing Adsense ads in a prominent
position on pages, and developing an authoritive website with
great copy writing and information.
Revenue from Google Adsense is determined by the competitiveness
of the terms targeted by the any ads displayed on website pages.
Since the cost per click of any ad is determined by advertiser
bidding, there is no way to predetermine the exact revenue generated
per click.
Google AdSense CTR
Our test examples show a great fluctuation of click through
rates for different websites-- as would be expected. Our test
cases involve a few information rich websites, and the average
CTR ranges from 1.6% to a staggering 9.0%. We cannot share any
specific details without violating our terms of service agreement
with Google, however!
We can say that based on the subject matter of each of our test
cases, that the Google Adsense program appears to be successful
both for publishers and advertisers.
Who Would Best Benefit from Adsense?
Informational websites are obviously the best candidates for
Google Adsense. In particular, the following types of websites
