Text Links
Our main page on website
navigation stresses the importance of link anchor text, which
is the text that website visitors actually click on to load another
page ( or "jump to" a location on the current page ). The search
engine algorithms of today's web give a great deal of weight to the
words
contained
within
text
links.
However, the wise website architect would do very
well to remember that while the words contained in the "clickable"
link
anchor text are "lent" to the page one is linking to, the search
engines also interpret link anchor text as actual page
content.
This can be either a blessing or a burden, depending
on how pages have been designed. As a practical example on text
link navigation, consider a text link menu with 3 links to three
content pages:
An improper construct might look something like this:
- Ford
Automobile Parts -
Pretend for a moment, that you a search engine spider
examining this text link navigation system. While there is nothing
wrong with the system, the text links are not accurately descriptive:
- Navigation -
With experience, a website architect can learn to
create text link systems that speak extremely clearly to the search
engine "spiders", and in a manner that reinforces the existing
page's content as well as lending just the "right" PR to the pages
being linked into.
