dmoz, The Open Directory Project: Getting Listed

Since the Open Directory projects uses volunteers to maintain all directory listings, there are no "Search Engine Optimization" tricks to getting listed prominently.

Websites submitted to the Open Directory Project should:

  • Be complete with no under construction logos or pages
  • Contain no broken links
  • Contain a cohesive layout and design that is appropriate for the subject matter
  • Contain at least one method of contact on the website ( two for commercial websites )
  • Be submitted to a category based on the website content
  • Have a design and rich content worthy of inclusion

Significance in Search Engine Optimization and Ranking

An ODP listing can be completely insignificant or incredibly effective for search engine ranking depending on many factors. While optimization of website pages are completely irrelevant to getting a listing with DMOZ, optimization of the title and ODP website description is of critical concern. Furthermore, the category a website is submitted to should be carefully studied from a search engine optimization perspective.

Things to consider when submitting to DMOZ:

  • Keyword and key terms located in the website title and description in relation to the category name and structure
  • Google Page Rank of the category being submitted to
  • Dilution of page rank caused by the number of links in the category

Gaining a listing in the Open Directory Project in a good category with an effective website title and description can be extremely advantageous to developing inbound traffic from the four major search engines.

  • Google uses the DMOZ data feed as a source for directory listings
  • Alexa uses the DMOZ data feed to list category that websites are listed in
